When is the BunkerHill Cafe open?? I have tried to go there many times and they have been closed....It's not hard to say how wonderful you are and then barely be open...It's hard test a resturant that isn't open....If they are so great and popular wouldn't they have to stay open to accomodate all these people that voted for them??

I miss Taco Shop: 7/5/2009
we had lived in Hays over 20 years and ate at the Taco Shop thousands of times. Best Mexican food ever!! We have lived in Ft. Myers, Florida for 5 years now and cannot find Mexican food even close to as good as Taco Shop. When we are in Hays visiting friends and family we always stop and indulge ourselves at Taco Shop. We even get extra to eat on the plane ride back. Once we even brought some back for our daughter and son-in-law who also lived in Hays and loved the Taco Shop. Oooh my mouth is watering just thinking about Taco Shop beef/nacho supreme.

Prairie Junction, Morland: 7/5/2009
Why isn't this restaurant on the list? They age their own prime rib (served only on Saturday night) and have a great atmosphere. Antiques and local cattle brands cover the walls and ceiling. Definitely worth the trip!

the best thing about professors is the fresh menu. evrything is from scratch. appetizers are awesome hand breaded. not frozen bar food. steaks are great. the country fried steak is the best around. again made to order not frozen. everyone should try professors. you wont be disappointed. did i mention great atmosphere? yup they have that too.

Dons literally must have the best cheeseburger in the state of Kansas, and El Ranchito is ran by great people and has amazing mexican food as well, with the best green salsa around!! Have you tried A&W at any other location? It's all the same! A&W is a chain, not an independent Kansas restaurant. If all of these other restaurants had millions of dollars of support behind them, they could be nationally known too. When you open a chain restaurant you are told how to run it, you are sent recipes and told where to order your food. Restaurants like Arthur’s Pizza, Bunker Hill Café, and Professors are all original. Nobody told them how to open and run a business. They are unique! They can’t just sit back and let the big A&W sign draw in business.

Any place that makes pies from scratch is rare today. Add to that her potato or macaroni salad and you will taste some of the best food ever made. While known for her hamburgers, Effie cooks a lot of great food. The fact she is over 80 and works circles around people half her age should earn her distinction and recognition as the best cook in Kansas.

Where's Tropps?: 6/28/2009
Sub station in Hill City has a great menu with fresh food prepared exceptionally. Tropps Bowhere Bar and Grill should also have a plce on this list. The all-in-one is a cardiac bomb like no other in the state. I have fond memories of Al's Chickenette from years past of great fried chicken. I was not impressed by Gille's the few times I've eaten there. The Duck Blind throws out great meals, as does Aces and eights in Plainville. Tina's in Plainville is a great choice, too. There are some excellent choices on this poll. I'll have to print off a list , so I can hit the ones I haven't visited so far.

I love the A&W in Russell. It is a wonderful environment. I love all the work that has been put into the inside with the beautiful remodle. I know this had to be costly and I appreciate it so much..very nice!!! The service is WONDERFUL...so friendly..The food is delicious!!!!It does have a chain name outside, which I believe is a quality name, but it is also a hometown environment inside with much care given to each costomer. I kmow many people that make it a point to stop in whenever they are passing through!! The great service and variety of food is why!!

I just have to say my family are steak conniseur's and we have eaten steak around the country literally. We agree hand's down there is no better steak ever that is as good as Big Ed's!! The steak's are very consistent and the taste is amazing. You should try it. I will be disappointed if they don't make the top 8, but I will still go there and consider it the best steak I have ever had. The large ribeye is to die for. We drive an hour and a half to eat it. You must try it!

I'm from eastern Ks. While traveling out West, we stopped by this bar on the corner of Hwy 183 and main in Stockton, Ks. We were greeted promptly by the owner who gratefully welcomed us and sat us at our table. The service was supreme and the food is worth a trip back very soon! Truly the best burger and BEST service in Western Kansas!

I love our local A&W resturant. I can get grilled cheese sandwiches, fish, grilled or crispy chicken sandwiches or salads, tacos, BBQ beef sandwichesor taco burgers. They have the pork t., and many types of burgers with many different toppings including bacon, jalopeos on both burgers or chicken, mushrooms, grilled onions and more. The icecream treats rock. There are many types. Polar swrils come in many flavors...Kit Kat, Snicker, Coookie Dough, Apple Pie, Strawberry chocolate, Hot fudge, and many more. You can get these in sundaes too. They also have cinnamon rolls. I love the toaster sandwiches including the blt toaster. The rootbeer is out of this world. It is make on site. This is an extra special care they do here. All A&W's don't make their rootbeer but they do here and that makes the rootbeer so much better...Oh those rootbeer floats and freezes! They make all flavors of freezes. Don't forget the fresh limeades or the sugarfree, fat free yogart...YUM!!!!

Im not from Ellis, but I work in Ellis, so I have to say, Arthur's Pizza and Mexican is my favorite taco place ever! They out do every taco place in Hays in my opinion. You get your oney's worth because they load with meat, unlike some of the taco places in Hays that load with lettuce and no meat! Best flavor and not full of dripping grease. Absolutely yummy!

Made from Scratch Food! 4 kinds of dough made fresh each morning. That means they start with flour and water. Refried beans that start as beans in the building not a bag of dried flakes. Chips, taco shells and baskets fried... no preservatives..... None needed they sell too FAST! Onions, green peppers, tomatoes diced by Arthur's Employees NOT diced in a bag and shipped. Mexican Beef and smothering chili that are created in the back kitchen on a 3 burner stove. You don't stay in business for over 20 years without made from scratch goodness!!!

Being the daughter of the owners, I may be biased, however, I can be stuck in that place with my family...and still think it's the best food in the world! Even when I have to make it myself, it's amazing! The fact that all of the crust choices are made daily (most of the time twice in a day) with fresh ingredients helps! And while the pizza definately tops our mexican, it is also made fresh. And, come on, what can you expect from a pizza place run by a German guy in the middle of Kansas? I hope to meet serve you, Mr. Pizzaman, when you come in to arthur's next. (and Miss Bunker Hill...isn't being the daughter of a restaruant owner wonderful? I hope meet you as well)

Being the daughter of the owners, I can guarantee you'll have an awesome meal every time you go. Everything is homemade, & you'll not find better quality anywhere. My dad is so picky about quality...even the lettuce garnish on your steak or catfish has to look great! People from all over the country have eaten there & said it's the best they've ever had. If you've never been; you really should drive over...make a reservation on the weekend though! They have been around for 35 years & deserve the recognition!

This is the best place in the world... the pickle is better then any mcdonalds or any a&w anywhere anytime.. there still the best resturant even when there CLOSED! lol You always get a good meal good service and its always what you wanted.. Plus the owner is the bomb!

Too much Hays, not enough other places: 6/9/2009
As a traveling gastronome myself, I've found it hard to get around that I have just a few votes to offer for all the good places there are in the area. I can easily understand the joy of A&W. Once a proud chain of dozens in NWK, is reduced to one in Russell. OK, the cheese curds are great. The rumor mill is flying that Long John SIlver's in Hays in considering adding A&W products to its Yum Brands lineup. Great. Now, let's look at elsewhere. Yes, the Bunker Hill Cafe still is in service. The fresh baked bread is great. In Hays, we can do Gella's, Jalisco's Gutch's, Al's (just for old time's sake), and Vernies. To go further out into NWK takes some doing. So let's start from west to east, with Crazy R's in Goodland, Aberdeen Steak House in Atwood, Then scoot over to the Chubby Pickle in P-Burg and the Duck Blind in Stockton. Heading south you forgot the Corner Cafe in LaCrosse, I think, but you got Effie's in Rush Center. Good comeback. My only regret here is that you guys started this list after Ernestine VanDuVall died. Her barbeque place in Nicodemus was a great road trip. Thankfully, her wonderful sauce lives on in jars--if you can find it beyond the Nicodemus Historical Site Visitors Center.

i find it quite entertaining that russell is even considered NW Kansas. Seriously, if you are in NW Kansas, you should really stop by the frontier in Oberlin. Great food, and very resonably priced. By the way, the place has only been around for over 50 years. If that has anything to do with it. ; )
