Academy adds up
Next fall at Fort Hays State University, the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science will open its doors to gifted 11th- and 12th-grade students from across the state. In keeping with the need for better mathematics and science education (and educators), the state of Kansas is funding this tuition-free opportunity.
The university will house these students in dormitory space set aside for this purpose. To make this "home away from home," an in-residence counselor will be available after hours. Academic and psychological counselors will coordinate student activities, and share after-hours call also. The director of the academy and the counselors will keep parents and teachers of students from participating high schools up to date on their students' progress, as well as about any personal difficulties the students might encounter. (After all, these will be high school students.)
This is a fantastic opportunity for selected participants. If you are interested in potential enrollment in the program, please contact Ron Keller, director, Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science, 210F Rarick Hall, 600 Park St., Fort Hays State University 67601-4099, e-mail: rgkeller@fhsu.edu or call (785) 628-5973.
