Velma C. Johnson

Velma C. Johnson, 91, Hays, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at her home.

She was born Jan. 12, 1917, southwest of Hays to Mervin L. and Charlotte (Thomas) Moore.

She married Arthur Johnson on Nov. 3, 1940, in WaKeeney. He preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1964. She was a licensed cosmetologist.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include two sons, Arthur L. Johnson, Salina, and Donald L. Johnson, Hays; a daughter, June L. Glantz-Howard, of the home; four grandchildren, Allan L. Johnson, Sutton, W. Virgina, Wayne L. Glantz, Long Beach, Calif., Bradley L. Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Velvet L. Johnson, Hays; two step-grandsons, Christopher Howard, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Jonathan Howard, Hays; nine great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Lloyd Moore; and five sisters, Alice Rogers, Mabel Campbell, Lorrene Patterson and Mamie and Lucille Moore.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine; burial in Mount Allen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. until time of service Saturday, both at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hays Medical Center, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or American Diabetes Association in care of the funeral home.
