Garden City drivers make an unusual pit stop

WaKEENEY -- It was hot, humid and their shop was several hours away in Garden City.

So Tim Leiker and Chad Weaver set up something of a makeshift shop out in front of the open-air car wash on WaKeeney's west side Monday.

And the crew drew plenty of curious looks as people drove by.

No surprise. It's not often that a truck hauling a self-enclosed trailer parks outside a car wash, rolling tool box and all-terrain vehicle parked sitting nearby.

What was more unusual, however, was that inside, under the canopy, one of two dirt track cars was parked, shiny from a car wash provided by Leiker.

Outside, a second car was jacked up, its real wheel and fender missing.

That's where Weaver, in the hot sun, pounded away at crinkled sheet metal that made up the rear fender of one of the cars driven by Leiker and his brother, Ron "Butch" Leiker Jr.

All three had been in Colby Sunday night for dirt track races there, which is where the fender on the jacked-up car got mangled.

Rather than head down to Garden City, Tim Leiker and Weaver headed straight to WaKeeney where they planned to take part in the races at the Trego County Free Fair Monday.

The fair continues today with the 4-H-FFA livestock and food auction and chain saw sculpture auction, both at 6 p.m., and a muddy pig brawl in the horse arena at 8 p.m.

Exhibits will be released at noon Thursday.
