HMC honors nurses

The scene was festive Friday afternoon as many nurses and staff members at Hays Medical Center gathered for a much-needed TGIF cake and punch break.
Balloons adorned the hallway, and as nurses were awarded for their hard work, Brenda Erbert got an unexpected surprise.
As Erbert received the first-ever Helping Hands PCT award, the room burst into applause.
"I'm shocked," Erbert said with tears in her eyes. "There are so many great nurses out there. It's a great honor."
Last week was national nurse's week, and Friday's ceremony concluded five days of special activities at HMC, including food basket deliveries. The week is coordinated with international nurse day, which is celebrated today in honor of Florence Nightingale's birthday.
Other individuals also were recognized. Annie Pechanec received LPN of the year, and the Health Unit Coordinator of the year award went to Linda Marshall.
"It's a great opportunity to celebrate our nursing staff and thank them for all they do," Chief Nursing Officer Terry Siek. "It's been a good week."
And the festivities aren't finished yet. This week marks national hospital week, and staff will enjoy a variety of activities such as a volleyball tournament, a putting contest, a book fair and community days.
"Hospital week is a really fun week for everyone to get involved," said Nikki Adams, director of associate development.
