Slattery expected to win primary nod easily
TOPEKA (AP) -- Democrats anticipate that former Rep. Jim Slattery won't have much trouble winning their Senate nomination in Tuesday's primary.
It's the race this fall that's likely to give Slattery fits.
Slattery and primary challenger Lee Jones, an Overland Park railroad engineer, are seeking the right to challenge Sen. Pat Roberts. The Republican incumbent has no primary opponent and figures to be a prohibitive favorite for re-election this fall.
On the Democratic side, Jones had little money, and Slattery raised about $1 million.
Roberts is seeking his third term in the Senate. He's raised more than $4.2 million and began television advertising in June.
Slattery represented the 2nd District of eastern Kansas in the House from 1983 through 1994, before becoming a Washington lobbyist.
