City to close golf course for more improvements

The Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course will be closed temporarily for improvements.

City of Hays Parks Director Jeff Boyle said at a city press briefing Tuesday the front nine holes of the course will close today and reopen Thursday.

More long-term improvements, however, also are on the agenda.

A new irrigation system was installed earlier this summer, and the course now needs to be re-seeded, Boyle said.

"I think everybody will be very pleased with the course when it's done," he said.

Seeding is slated to begin Sept. 2, depending on weather conditions.

Essentially, this means the course will close for the remainder of the year Aug. 19, reopening in March.

Other improvements slated for completion this fall include tree removal, spraying for weeds and leveling holes, he said.

The city commission will meet for a work session at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at city hall.

Agenda items include:

* Final budget discussion. Commissioners will have one more opportunity to discuss the proposed budget or ask questions before the Aug. 14 public hearing.

* Possible purchase of a triplex reel mower for the golf course. Two bids have been received for the item.

* Discussion of allowing micro-utility trucks on city streets.

* Discussion of airport hangars at Hays Regional Airport. One hangar owner has decided to sell, and construction of another hangar has been proposed.

* A possible ordinance allowing the city of Hays to opt out of the Kansas One-Call system.
