Panther golf team rolling into 3A regional
By RANDY GONZALES
The Phillipsburg prep boys' golf team has been rolling right along this season entering Monday's Class 3A Regional Championships at Lakin. The regional starts at 9 a.m.
The Panthers have won seven of 10 meets and are coming off winning the Mid-Continent League title on Thursday at Ellis. It's the fourth straight year the Phillipsburg boys have won the conference meet.
But Lakin edged Phiilipsburg for first place at the regional last season. Still, Phillipsburg made it to state, finishing sixth. And Lakin has the regional on its home course this time.
The top two teams and top five individuals not on the top two teams advance to next week's state meet at Salina Municipal Golf Course.
"Lakin's got a really good team, beat us by a stroke last year at regional," Phillipsburg coach Keith Sides said. "They have the home-course advantage, but our kids competed real well all year."
Players can compete in just eight meets during the season, and by scheduling 10, the Panthers were shorthanded in the meets they didn't finish first, Sides said.
But the Panthers, led by junior Jeff Jarvis, will be at full strength Monday. Jarvis has won seven of the eight meets he has played in this year.
No. 2 for the Panthers is senior Chris Schneider, who has finished second at several tourneys this spring, Sides said.
Sides also will be counting on seniors Adrian Barker and Joe Monroe.
Sides and his players have not played the Lakin course, but the Phillipsburg coach did a Google search and found it to be "flat and straight."
"We'll go down there Sunday, play a practice round," Sides said. "Know what to expect Monday morning."
Also at the Lakin regional from the area are Thomas More Prep-Marian and Norton.
