MACKSVILLE -- Led by its dominating defense, Victoria earned a 14-12 road victory against Macksville in a matchup of two eight-man powerhouses and Central Prairie League rivals in Friday night's season opener.

Macksville, 13-0 last season and Eight-Man, Division I state champions, was ranked No. 1 in Eight-Man, Division I in the preseason coaches' poll. Victoria, winner of two state titles in the last four years, stood No. 4 in Eight-Man, Division II.

Victoria's win gave the Knights 22 wins in Doug Oberle's 25 games as head coach. Before Friday, Macksville had won 22 of 23 games and hadn't lost in the regular season since Week 2 in 2006.

Victoria led 14-6 when Macksville scored with 2:11 left in the game. The Knights, who allowed just 8.1 points per game last year, stopped Kade Schnoebelen short on the 2-point conversion.

Jordan Ottley led Victoria with 104 yards rushing, including a 16-yard TD. He also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass. Blake Klaus had 76 yards rushing.

WINONA -- Senior Chase Waldman ran for three touchdowns and threw for a TD in overtime and also connected on the winning 2-point conversion pass as Wheatland-Grinnell edged Triplains-Brewster 28-26 in Friday night's season opener.

Junior Tad Sheets ran for two touchdowns for Triplains-Brewster, including one in overtime, but the Titans missed on the 2-point conversion that would have sent the game into a second overtime.

ATWOOD -- Ellis quarterback Chase King threw a TD pass to tie the game, then ran for a score for what proved to be the winning points as the Railroaders edged Atwood 12-6 in Friday night's season opener.

Drew Basgall got Atwood on the scoreboard first on a 3-yard run, but King threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to make it 6-6 at halftime. King then scored from 6 yards out in the third quarter for the only points of the second half.
